Life Story Work

Understanding the story behind the memories.

Life story work can help children and young people understand their experiences, relationships, identity and the events that have shaped their lives. But a life isn’t only a collection of major events — the ordinary moments matter too.

Our Life Story Work resources bring together practical guidance, research and evidence for carers, social workers and anyone supporting children and young people in care.

Getting started
What is life story work?
Explore what life story work means, why it’s important and how it can help children and young people understand their experiences and identity.
Everyday moments
Why do everyday memories matter?
The moments that seem ordinary today can become an important connection to childhood later. Explore why capturing everyday life matters alongside milestones and significant events.
Practical guidance
What should carers record?
Life story work doesn’t need to wait for a formal session. Explore practical ideas for capturing people, places, achievements, routines and everyday experiences as they happen.
Continuity
What happens to memories when placements change?
Changes in placement can create gaps in a child’s personal history. Explore why continuity matters and how memories can be preserved when circumstances change.
Digital practice
What is digital life story work?
Digital life story work can help memories develop throughout childhood rather than relying on a single physical record. Explore how digital approaches can complement established life story practice.
Research
What does the research tell us?
Explore research, evidence and guidance relating to life story work, identity, memory, continuity and outcomes for children and young people in care.
For Carers

The moments you capture today can matter for a lifetime.

Childhood isn’t only made up of birthdays, holidays and big milestones. It’s the everyday things too — a favourite meal, a football match, a school award, a day at the beach, a new haircut, a joke that made everyone laugh.

CaringLife helps you capture those moments as they happen, creating a collection of memories that can grow with a child.
What should I add?
Big moments
Milestones & celebrations
Birthdays, holidays, school achievements and celebrations — the moments that already feel important.
Everyday life
The ordinary afternoons
A trip to the park, cooking dinner together, getting muddy, learning to ride a bike. Not every memory needs to be important today to become important later.
People & places
Friendships, hobbies & family occasions
The people, places and everyday experiences that help tell the story of a child’s life.
Context
The story behind the photos and videos
Where were you? Who was there? What happened? A few words can give a photograph meaning that might otherwise be forgotten.
Privacy comes first

CaringLife is a private, secure space for a child’s memories and life story. It isn’t social media, and nothing is publicly available. Access is carefully managed based on each person’s role and relationship with the child.

When adding memories, consider what is appropriate, respectful and meaningful for the child. If you’re unsure about anything you’d like to add, speak with the child’s social worker or relevant professional.

More questions carers ask

Can children add their own memories?

Yes. CaringLife gives children and young people the opportunity to participate in their own life story. They can contribute their own memories and reflections where appropriate, helping their CaringLife reflect their experiences and perspective as well as those of the adults around them.

The placement may change. Their story doesn’t start again. CaringLife is designed to preserve continuity when carers, placements or circumstances change. Memories already captured remain connected to the child’s account while access can be updated to reflect their new circumstances — helping prevent pieces of childhood being left on an old phone, inside a physical folder or with someone who is no longer part of the child’s everyday life.

Your care organisation will set up your CaringLife account, connect you with the child in your care and provide your login details. Once you’re signed in, you can start adding memories.

For Social Workers

Supporting life story work as life happens.

Life story work shouldn’t depend on someone finding a folder years later, or piecing a childhood back together from incomplete records.

CaringLife gives you one secure place to capture memories as they happen, so children build a richer, more continuous record of their lives. It’s not here to replace good life story practice — it just gives that work somewhere to live and grow.

Setting up and managing access

Getting set up
Setting up accounts
We work with your organisation to set up the service and account structure. From there, you and your colleagues can manage children, carers and access in line with your roles — no complicated admin required.
Who can see what
Who can access a child's CaringLife
Access is based on role and relationship to the child, so it’s never public. Your organisation keeps oversight of who’s connected and how accounts are managed.

Moderation & continuity

Moderation
How moderation works
CaringLife includes built-in moderation, designed for the safeguarding environment you work in. You can review what’s added, so carers and young people can contribute while you keep appropriate oversight — without having to check everything yourself.
Placement changes
The story continues
A child’s memories stay with their account. When they move, you can update who has access without starting a new story from scratch.
Leaving care
Leaving care
Leaving care doesn’t mean losing childhood memories — they stay available to the young person as they move into adulthood.
Turning 18
Growing into ownership
As they become an adult, a young person gets more control of their own account — while everything built up throughout their childhood stays intact.
How is children’s information protected?
CaringLife was built for the sensitive information you work with every day — managed permissions, role-based access, secure authentication and secure hosting, all as standard. We also work with your organisation to support its data protection and information governance requirements, so you don’t have to figure that part out alone.
Alongside existing practice
CaringLife isn't here to replace the relationships, conversations and professional practice that make life story work meaningful — it just gives that work somewhere secure to live and grow over time.
For Children & Young People

Your life. Your memories. Your story.

Your life is made up of thousands of moments. Some will feel important now. Others might become important when you’re older.

CaringLife is a safe place where memories from your life can be kept together, so you can look back at the people, places and experiences that have been part of your story.

Why you have CaringLife

It’s for you
Why do I have CaringLife?
Because your memories matter. CaringLife gives you somewhere to keep photos, videos, stories and important moments from your life, so they aren’t lost as you grow up.
It’s yours to add to
Is CaringLife about me?
Yes — it’s your life story. Other people may help add memories while you’re growing up, but you can add your own too: a photo, somewhere you’ve been, or something you’re proud of.
Your CaringLife is private
Only people who’ve been given the right access can see or contribute to your CaringLife. It isn’t social media — your memories aren’t posted publicly, and people can’t search for your CaringLife online. If you ever want to know who can see your information, you can ask your carer or social worker.
As things change
Your story. Your questions.
You can always ask about your CaringLife, what’s been added, and who can see it. Your social worker, carer or another trusted adult can help explain anything you want to understand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions.

What is CaringLife?

CaringLife is a secure digital life story platform for children and young people in care. It provides somewhere for photos, videos, documents, written memories and reflections to be preserved throughout childhood and beyond.

Yes. CaringLife can be accessed across web, tablet and supported mobile devices, including iOS and Android. This makes it easier to capture memories when they happen rather than waiting until later.

Depending on how an account is established, memories can be contributed by carers, authorised professionals and children and young people themselves.

No. CaringLife isn’t a social network. Children’s memories aren’t published publicly and access is managed through controlled accounts and permissions.

Their CaringLife doesn’t need to start again. Existing memories can remain connected to the child’s account while access is adjusted to reflect their new circumstances.

CaringLife is designed around long-term continuity. Leaving care shouldn’t mean losing the memories that have been collected throughout childhood.
